November brings nights of fun aplenty to Harborough Theatre

From grand opera to madcap comedy, there’s plenty to enjoy

A busy month of entertainment awaits at Harborough Theatre, with theatre, comedy and opera on the packed programme.

Running until Saturday November 7, dark comedy The Southbury Child is presented Market Harborough Drama Society. The play tells of a Devonshire priest, with a propensity for drink and a wandering eye, who manages his parish with charm and occasional wilfulness. But his good standing in the community is shaken when his faith compels him to take an unpopular stand over a child’s funeral. As the priest finds himself isolated in a whirl of public opinion, cracks in his own life become more apparent and he faces a future that could threaten everything he holds dear.

Touring show The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town comes to the venue on Sunday November 8. Written by Spike Milligan and Ronnie Barker, the Jack the Ripper parody is packed with surreal absurdism, clever puns, near-the-knuckle ribaldry, quick-fire jokes and ingenious wordplay.

Royal Ballet and Opera Live: Carmen by George Bizet will be screened at the theatre on Tuesday November 10. The classic opera tells the story of a passionate and free-spirited woman who works in a cigarette factory in Seville Spain. She seduces Don Jose, a naïve soldier, who falls deeply in love with her. But Carmen’s wandering heart has other ideas.

The National Theatre’s production of The Golden Boy will be screened on Thursday November 12. Starring Josh O’Connor, Hayley Squires and Daniel Mays, it tells the story of Joe Bonaparte, a fiercely talented 21-year-old violinist. Tempted by the promise of rapid wealth and celebrity, Joe abandons his musical aspirations to pursue a career as a professional prize fighter, and becomes caught in a toxic web of greedy managers, cynical lovers and mobsters.

Antony Howes’ one-man version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will take to the stage on Saturday November 14. Howes, familiar from television series including Emmerdale, Casualty and Doctors, plays 17 parts in different accents, complete with tap dancing and juggling.

And comedy night Ha Ha Harborough returns on Saturday November 28 with performances from Tom Taylor, Aideen McQueen and James Beckett. Rob Coleman is MC.
