Medbourne villagers knit 5,000 poppies for special Remembrance display

More than 30 villagers have transformed Medbourne by knitting and crocheting 5,000 poppies to mark Remembrance Day.

The handmade poppies will be displayed around the village, including at the war memorial, St Giles’ church doors and gates, around the village entrance gates and on the Tommy soldier statues.

The idea came from Mim Nance who tends to the war memorial with her husband David.

People have made traditional red poppies - using various shades of red – while others create white poppies to commemorate the conscientious objectors and also purple poppies to remember the role animals played in both of the world wars.

Mim said: "I'd like to thank everyone who has joined in this amazing achievement. Some people have been able to add a few poppies and some have created over a hundred poppies but each and every poppy will be used to recognise and remember our war effort over the decades.

"The project has really brought people together. And now we have to ask 'what is our next creative project?’”
