New 'town council' for Market Harborough coming in April 2027

People living in Market Harborough will get a new town council, with the authority taking effect from April 2027.

Harborough District Council has agreed plans to create the new council after a year of consultations with residents.

The final consultation found that 93.4 per cent of respondents supported the creation of a ‘parish council’ for the town.

There will be 17 parish councillors to be elected in May 2027.

Currently, the district council deals with amenities like parks and cemeteries because the town doesn’t have its own parish administration.

The new council will mean people living in the town have greater representation and a stronger voice in issues affecting their community.

The parish precept is expected to increase council tax by an average of £18 a year for a band D property.

Cllr Paul Dannes said: “The strong support shown throughout this review demonstrates that residents want a parish council for Market Harborough.

“This is an important milestone for the town, and we now look forward to working towards the establishment of the new council and its first elections in 2027.”
