Former Army Cadet Force building in Harborough could be demolished to make way for new homes

A former Army Cadet Force building in Market Harborough could be flattened to make way for a number of new townhouses.

Applicant Stylish Living has put forward the plans for the former military building, off Yeomanry Court, to make way for five three-storey homes with gardens and car parking facilities.

The proposal includes the demolition of the existing single storey building to make way for the five homes which would be built on the original footprint of the Army Cadet Force building.

Modifications to the site boundary would also be made as part of the plan.

In its application, Stylish Living states that the former army building is in a “poor condition” and of a construction that does not reflect the character or quality of the surrounding area.

The applicant adds the building makes a “limited contribution” to the Yeomanry Court area and is “visually incongruous” too, believing that demolition was “justified” so that a “more appropriate form of development” could take its place.

If approved, each new townhouse would include an open-plan living/kitchen/dining area, with three beds, en-suite and bathroom. Documents note that all homes would be designed with a garden space at the rear too.

Plans state that whilst the homes could “reasonably be delivered” without on-site parking, off-street parking has been included in the proposals for four of the properties – with one “intentionally” left “without a parking space”.

Plans note the site is in a mainly residential area surrounded by mainly two to three storey homes. On the west is a community hall and further west is the Market Harborough medical centre.

Documents state the site is located on the border of the Market Harborough Conservation Area, and adds, therefore that “careful consideration has been paid to the character of the proposed building and retaining its historical features”.

Consultation runs until Monday, March 23. A decision on the plans is expected by Thursday, April 16.
