Fleckney pub scraps parking charges after backlash from villagers

A Fleckney pub has scrapped its parking charges after ongoing complaints from villagers.

The Old Crown announced on October 21 that it stopped enforcing car parking charges the week before, on October 13.

This came after people living in the village criticised the move to introduce charges for parking in the pub’s car park directly next to the premises, and across the road beside the fish bar.

Cameras and signs were installed in September to make sure customers were paying for parking.

In a statement posted online, tenant LEC Pubs said: “When we originally introduced parking enforcement, our intention was simply to ensure that customers visiting The Old Crown had somewhere to park.

“We wanted to prevent the car park from being used by non-customers for extended periods, making it easier for those supporting our pub to find a parking space.

“However, following the introduction of the scheme, we received a significant response from the local community, with many residents expressing their concerns and frustrations.

“We have listened to those concerns, and we have acted.”

Earlier this month, Stephen Ashmore was hit with a fine despite him paying for his short stay in the car park.

After appealing the notice, the fine was withdrawn.

LEC Pubs said: “The local community has spoken, and we believe removing the enforcement is the right thing to do.

“We would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views. Your feedback has been heard and has directly influenced this decision.”

People have asked if they can claim back money from the fines, and what should be done with outstanding fixed penalty notices.

LEC Pubs and Everards did not respond to the Harborough Mail’s questions regarding the delay in announcing the decision, what residents with fines should do and advice for those who have already paid.
