Harborough's Tom Place proves he belongs among England’s strongest elite
Strength athlete Tom Place - local to Market Harborough - put on a powerhouse performance at the York Barbican over the weekend, proving he belongs squarely among the nation’s elite with an impressive sixth-placed finish at the 2026 Giants Live England’s Strongest Man contest.

Going head-to-head against what was widely considered the most stacked 13-man lineup ever assembled for the national championship, Place delivered a clinical, high-intensity battle across five gruelling events.
When the final scores were tallied, he came away just half a point shy of fifth place, firmly establishing himself as a rising threat on the professional circuit and putting his name in serious contention for a call-up to Britain’s Strongest Man.

Competing under the high-pressure lights and frantic pace of the world-renowned Giants Live arena tour, Place kicked off the day tackling a monstrous Dumbbell Medley. Athletes were tasked with pressing a series of single-arm dumbbells overhead ranging from 80kg up to a staggering 120kg, demanding an extraordinary blend of explosive power, balance, and shoulder stability.
Place kept the momentum going in the brutal 400kg wooden oak frame carry, hauling the massive rig over a 20-meter course, before delivering one of the true standout highlights of the entire afternoon on the deadlift.
Facing down a colossal 400kg on the bar, Place brought the roaring York crowd to their feet with a massive display, locking out 3 full repetitions a statement performance on one of the heaviest events in modern strongman.
The brutal gauntlet continued into the latter half of the contest with the 160kg Stone to Shoulder, where athletes had to lap, extend, and stabilise a massive atlas stone on their shoulder, before concluding with the Sandbag Steeplechase to close out the show.

Leaving York with a sixth-placed finish against the premier strength talent in the country is no small feat. For Place, the weekend wasn't just a validation of months of relentless preparation, but a clear signpost that he is ready to go toe-to-toe with the very best in the sport.
