A top councillor has blasted Network Rail because Market Harborough railway station still has temporary toilets – 15 months after a sweeping £53 million revamp.

Cllr Phil Knowles hit out as fed-up commuters and passengers are still being forced to use a Portacabin at the front of the busy station.

He spoke as Network Rail said they are “working hard” on installing permanent new lavatories at the station.

Cllr Knowles, who heads up the Liberal Democrats on Harborough council, said: “This is simply not good enough.

“How can it be that thousands of people who use our station year in year out are still having to go to a Portacabin to spend a penny?

“It’s simply not acceptable – and questions have to be answered.”

He said new toilet facilities “should have been included from day one of the major recent upgrade and been in place well over a year ago”.

“Will we finally see the new toilets next spring?

“Who knows?

“We need some absolute guarantees,” insisted Cllr Knowles.

“The many people of Market Harborough and surrounding area who use our station all the time deserve far better than this appalling state of affairs.

“This debacle has gone on for far too long and needs sorting now.”

Gavin Crook, Sponsor for Network Rail, said: “We’re really grateful for the patience of station users at Market Harborough and would like to reassure them that we are working hard on plans for the new toilet facilities.

“The final design will be finished shortly and we’ll then look to appoint a contractor for the work.

“We’ll be able to share more details around the programme, including the expected completion date, in the New Year.”
