Rotarians have been playing a key role helping hundreds of people receive crucial flu vaccinations at Market Harborough Medical Centre

The public-spirited volunteers provided excellent support and back-up as up to six nurses gave patients their jabs at special clinics at the busy Coventry Road complex.

Rotarians guided people to the right entrance doors as they reminded them to put on their face coverings amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

And they asked disabled patients to stay in their car as they went to fetch the nurse to vaccinate them in the car park.

Rotarians also told people where to drive and park up at a drive-through session.

Hi-vis vests, proudly emblazoned with the Rotary Club name and logo, were worn to mark them out as Rotarian assistants.

Rotary Club organiser Hilary Hearnshaw said: “All the Rotarian duties were carried out outdoors.

“We were all properly socially-distanced and we were all wearing masks so it was very safe as well as pleasant and friendly.”

She added: “It was especially pleasing that Rotarians were supported by members of the Rotaract club, Friends of MH Rotary Club, Inspire satellite club and one potential new member.

“We all took turns on the rota.

“It was such a good thing to do as it meant that we could provide top-class Rotary service to the community of Market Harborough and beyond.”

Julie Simpson, the medical centre’s practice manager, said: “We were delighted to have the Rotarians help us no end outside the building.

“It freed up our staff so that they could stay near reception and near the phones or else carry out important clinical duties.”

So far nearly 2,500 people from all over the area have been vaccinated at clinics where Rotarians have come forward to help out.
