Two-day street party in Harborough district to celebrate VE Day - here are the details

A massive two-day indoor street party will be thrown to celebrate VE Day at a high-profile Harborough wartime air base.

The huge knees-up will rock Bruntingthorpe Airfield on Friday May 8 – the 75th anniversary of the momentous defeat of Nazi Germany – and Saturday May 9.

The landmark bash at the sprawling local former RAF station is being organised and staged by Lutterworth Rotary Club.

And the club is ploughing all profits made from the party into four well-known local charities.

    A Bruntingthorpe Airfield spokesman said: “The 75th anniversary provides us with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice and courage of this generation.”

    Almost 80 years old now, the base was built in 1942 and used as an Operational Training Base for the RAF throughout the Second World War.

    Lutterworth Rotary is presenting VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebration at Hangar’42, Bruntingthorpe to commemorate winning the six-year European war.

    “On both the 8th and 9th of May 2020 we’ll be looking to recreate that victory spirit by hosting the ultimate indoor street party.

    “It will be held in our specialist event centre, Hangar’42,” said the spokesman.

    “From 7.30pm until 00.30am the Hangar will be celebration central with musical performances that’ll take you right back to the Glenn Miller days.

    “You won’t be able to resist ‘Doin’ the jive’.”

    Guests are being asked to dress up as their parents and grandparents would have done back in 1945 to make the historic occasion even more authentic.

    “Tickets are available to be purchased for tables of 10 at £250.

    “Guests are welcome to bring their own picnics and drinks.

    “But food hampers are available to pre-order and purchase at an extra cost if you prefer,” added the spokesman.

    “A selection of beverages will also be available to purchase on the night.

    “All profits from the event will be donated to four chosen charities.”
