Hear everything from Tchaikovsky to Bond in classical season at Northampton
World class artists and inspirational performances will once more delight audiences at the 2017/2018 Orchestral Season at the Royal and Derngate in Northampton.
Six concerts will be performed by the resident orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with their October performance forming the grand Gala Concert of the 12th annual Malcolm Arnold Festival.
The festival will cover the whole weekend of October 14 and 15 to celebrate the life and works of the prolific Northampton born composer.
The orchestral season as a whole covers music from Tchaikovsky to film score classics, offering something to suit all tastes. The season gets under way at 7.30pm on Sunday May 14 with Christian Kluxen Conducts Tchaikovsky. The concert will open at galloping pace with Rossini’s William Tell Overture.
Acclaimed pianist Martin Roscoe will join the orchestra for Mendelssohn’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No 1 before the programme comes to a close with Tchaikovsky’s towering masterpiece, his Symphony No 6, Pathetique.
Moving into the summer, the concert at 7.30pm on Sunday June 18 features Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, one of the most foremost violin concertos of the Romantic era, performed by Jan Mracek. Conducted by Martyn Brabbins, the concert will open with Debussy and the evening will be completed by Shostokovich.
Audiences will be transported to the exciting world of the silver screen, from swashbuckling pirate ships to Gladiator battles, with the Royal Philharmonic’s Film Music Gala at 7.30pm on Sunday July 16. From the classic sweeping strings of Out of Africa to the epic fantasy landscape of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this concert will feature many all time film favourites.
Joining the orchestra for a special tribute to the composer John Barry,including the iconic themes from the Bond films Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever, will be singer Alison Jiear who dazzled audiences of Britain’s Got Talent and starred in Cinderella at the Royal and Derngate in 2015.
