NETBALL: Injuries are no problem as Mavericks see off Welland Valley

Foxton Mavericks overcame injury problems to record an impressive 53-12 win over Welland Valley Blinders in the Market Harborough Netball League.

Mavericks wasted no time in taking control, winning the first quarter 18-3 with some superb turnovers and defensive prowess from Julia Trapp.

Sarah van Nierop controlled things from the centre as Mavericks moved into a 25-7 advantage at half-time and, although Krish Darji performed well in the second half for Blinders, Mavericks proved too strong.

It was always going to be a tough task for back-to-netballers Siamo Sirens as they took on unbeaten Northants Storm.

Sirens did score four goals against Storm’s defence in the opening quarter but Storm’s experience and talent made it difficult for them in the remainder of the match, despite a good individual display from Hollie Spiezick.

As they entered the final quarter, Storm were 24-7 up and, in a showcase of superb control and positioning, attacker Chanelle Bennett helped seal a 32-8 victory.

Lighting took control of their match with Harborough Harriers with centre Charlotte Mathers linking the play through the midcourt.

Hannah Foreman scored 11 goals for her team and Lighting saw out a 35-21 victory, despite Jess Davies and Claire Bolton helping Harriers to win the third quarter.

A physical contest saw Lutterworth Robins eventually prove too strong for Foxton Flyers in a 36-15 success.

Robins took a 10-6 lead in the first quarter and fine play from Emma Payne and Abbie Hall ensured the Lutterworth side remained in front 17-10 at half-time.

Lucy Matthews-Kirk created a number of turnovers for Flyers in a tough third quarter but it was Robins who came through a fiery final period to secure the win.

Unbeaten Club Correze continued their domination of the court in a 67-21 victory over Turner’s Tornadoes.

The Correze midcourt superstar Emily Morgan was an impenetrable wall, blocking the movement and stopping the flow of the through court plays being made by the Turner’s team, despite the best efforts of Jess Hughes and Benita Percival.

At their attacking end of the court, the Correze shooter Mia Baker was determined in her assault on goal as she helped her team win all four quarters.

In a fast paced and competitive match, young-guns Forman’s Falcons took on league stalwarts, Aircare Thunder.

A tight first quarter saw Thunder hold a narrow 11-10 advantage thanks to some superb defensive work from Jodie Haynes but Falcons came out fighting in the second quarter, led from the centre position by Liv Percival.

At both ends of the court, the youngsters were on fine form.

For Falcons, Freya Leveritt was fundamental in multiple possession turnovers and for Thunder, in attack, Ellie Chapman was quick to move around the much taller defence.

By the final whistle, Falcons had stamped their authority on the match with a 41-29 win.

The final match of the day saw Snowfinders going up against Knighton.

Sophie Pounds was accurate and fast in her movement for Snowfinders while Elena Bensi stook strong against the experienced Knighton midcourt.

However, Knighton were too strong at both ends of the court, halting the progress of the ball with excellent link up play from Victoria Bayley and in finding the tightest of spaces from which to move the ball in attack through the accuracy of Rachael Pawley.

Knighton were in control throughout the first three quarters and they eventually secured a 44-25 win.
