A woman was killed in an horrific crash in Market Harborough this morning (Saturday).

The victim, who hasn’t been named, was declared dead at the scene after the devastating one-vehicle smash off Great Bowden Road.

The fatal accident involving a Vauxhall Corsa happened at about 10.20am today near to Albany Road, police said.

An air ambulance backed up by police, firefighters and land ambulances raced to the scene after the alarm was raised.

Police immediately sealed off the road between Albany Road and Great Bowden Road as an urgent investigation was launched.

The normally busy route has now been reopened as police urged any witnesses to come forward.

One neighbour reported hearing a “screeching of brakes and a lot of terrible screaming and shouting” near long-established timber merchants Gibbs & Dandy.

Stunned eye-witnesses said they saw two helicopters hovering overhead as a battery of police cars dashed to the spot.

One of the air ambulance choppers landed on the local green just yards away from people’s homes as shocked residents looked on.

Two medics, said to be wearing fully-protective hazmat suits amid the coronavirus crisis, were also at the scene as the drama unfolded.

Nobody tried to get any closer to see what was going on as the town continues to be locked down with the fight to combat the virus in full flow.

Police vehicles, including forensic science vans, were pictured parked up outside IT company SymCirrus.

Officers were also spotted going in to the building as they strived to piece together what caused the tragedy.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said they were alerted at 10.29am today.

A Fire Control spokeswoman said they sent an appliance and a tactical response vehicle from Harborough as well as an appliance from Desborough to the crash.

Appealing for eye-witnesses, Det Con Pete Davies, of Leicestershire Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle being driven beforehand.

“If you have dash cam installed in your vehicle or any CCTV footage which captured what happened please get in touch.”

If you saw the crash or have any information then please call police on 101 quoting incident 146 of 28 March.
