Tributes to young cyclist Kian Gill who died after a collision with a car

Football enthusiast Kian Gill (15) was a “fantastic lad” who always worked conscientiously for his team, and always had a smile on his face, said his team manager today.

Kian died at around 5.50pm on Friday,after a collision with a Vauxhall Insignia.

The accident happened on Bonehams Lane, a country road between Lutterworth and Gilmorton. The air ambulance was called to the scene, but Kian died from his injuries.

Kian was a pupil at Lutterworth College, but the 15-year-old was also a member of Kibworth and Smeeton Juniors Under 16 football team.

The Under-16s team manager Grant Mason said today; “Kian had played for us for two seasons.

“We all know that the ages 14, 15 and 16 can be some of the surliest times,but Kian was never like that at all. He was always someone with a smile on his face and a joke, always there for training in the sun, or rain and he never complained.

“He was fully-committed to the team, but more than that he was a fabulous lad to know.”

The club had a memorial event at their Kibworth ground at the weekend, and Mr Mason said; “Every single one of Kian’s team mates came back, because they all wanted to talk about Kian”.

A row of football shirt tributes were placed at the accident site in Bonehams Lane at the weekend by friends of Kian.

Tributes were paid to Kian on social media by his friends, and by the football club he played for.

Leicestershire police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, or anyone who saw the bicycle or the car before the collision, to contact Pc Kath Orr on 101.

The driver of the Vauxhall Insignia involved in the crash was not injured.

Tributes on social media included a tweet from Kibworth and Smeeton Juniors football club, which read: “I have the incredibly sad task to let you know that Kian Gill, one of our U16 players, was killed last night.”

A statement on the Lutterworth College website, where Kian went to school, today (Mon) said advice and assistance would be available throughout the day “to support our students during this very difficult week”.
