A driver has been arrested by police after a car smashed into two back garden fences in Market Harborough in the early hours of Thursday (November 12).

The man aged 43 was detained after the silver Volvo V40 estate careered off the road and ploughed into the gardens in Britannia Road in the centre of town.

The crash happened at about 4.35am.

A man who lives in one of the houses with a badly-damaged fence told the Harborough Mail: “The accident was certainly dramatic.

“It’s not something you expect to happen at any time – never mind as you are lying in your bed asleep before 5 in the morning!”

The 24-year-old man, who asked not to be named, told how the drama unfolded.

“I was fast asleep with my partner when we heard a loud bang.

“One of my neighbours came round to give us a knock after they were woken up too by the noise.

“I immediately jumped out of bed, got dressed and went out there to find the driver still in the car,” he said.

“It was hard to take in what had happened and all the damage that had been caused.

“But the main thing is that no one was hurt in this crash – including the driver.

“To be fair the driver called the police himself at the scene.

“It’s a huge inconvenience.

“The crash has destroyed our fence, hit a shed and also caused damage in next door’s garden too – damaging their kids’ trampoline.

“I have put up a temporary fence and now one way or another we’ll just have to get the garden permanently sorted out,” said the man who’s lived there about a year and rents the house.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at around 5.40am yesterday (12 November) to a report of a road traffic collision in Market Harborough.

“It happened in Britannia Walk and involved a Volvo V40 which was in collision with a fence and a shed.

“No injuries were reported.”

She added: “A 43-year-old man from Northamptonshire was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink and has been released under investigation.

“Enquiries are continuing.”
