The Conservatives have lost their majority on Harborough District Council.

The last results have just been announced - and while the Tories still hold the most seats (15) they are only two ahead of the Liberal Democrats on 13.

Before the election, the Conservatives held 22 seats and the Lib Dems had 11.

The Green Party won three seats - all in the Market Harborough Welland Ward - and Labour also also gained three seats.

This means that no party on the council has overall control so coalition talks will now no doubt begin.

The final total is therefore:

Conservative: 15 (seven seat loss)

Liberal Democrats: 13 (two seat gain)

Labour: 3 (three seat gain)

Green: 3 (three seat gain)

Conservative leader Phil King said he has already reached out to other parties in an attempt to form a coalition. He added: “I'd like to thank all 125 people who stood for election on this occasion, our elections staff and most importantly our voters for taking the time to cast their votes.

“Your message has been received and understood. Whilst I'm delighted on a personal level to be re-elected to represent the Kibworths ward, it's disappointing that a number of excellent colleagues were unsuccessful in being re-elected, due to protest voting or staying at home vote by Conservative supporters.

"As the Conservative group is still the majority group on the council, in order to seek a majority to run the council I have already reached out to opposition groups to see whether a deal is possible or not, only the coming days will tell.”
