Travellers who pitched up in a busy shoppers’ car park in Market Harborough town centre have moved out.

The group parked about a dozen caravans, recreational vehicles and motorhomes on the Commons Car Park behind the Co-op store off Coventry Road on Sunday (October 11).

They were given until 12midday today (Wednesday) to leave - or they would have been forced to go by the police.

The group is thought to have got up and left last night or early this morning.

Harborough District Council workers were spotted clearing up rubbish they dumped on the site and left behind them at about 7.30am today.

A spokesperson for the Multi-Agency Traveller Unit, which represents both Harborough council and Leicestershire County Council, said: “We gave them notice to vacate the site by 12pm on Wednesday 14th October, which will be enforced by the police if necessary.”

The travellers, who are not thought to be from the area, turned up out of the blue before descending on the popular car park in the middle of Market Harborough.
