Controversial bin charges for new homes in Harborough will not go ahead

The district council would have saved over £100,000 a year if it had gone ahead with the controversial blueprint to charge new residents.

New householders would have been forced to shell out up to £94 for black, blue and green bins if the under-fire scheme had been pushed through.

But the initiative was binned at a full council meeting on Monday night.

But bigger families throughout Harborough are being encouraged to generate less waste by being given smaller bins.

Homes with five or more people will receive 240-litre bins instead of 360-litre bins in an attempt to boost more recycling.
