The men, who were travelling in the van, died at the scene after the vehicles crashed on the busy southbound route between Junction 2 at Coventry and Junction 1 at Rugby just before 5.30am on December 17.

Ambulance crews arrived to find the two men could not be saved. The driver of the lorry is described as being “shaken” but uninjured.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When crews arrived they found a van and a lorry that had been in a significant collision.

“Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either man in the van and they were confirmed deceased on scene.

“The lorry driver was checked over by ambulance staff; he was uninjured, but understandably shaken by what had happened.”

Warwickshire Police are now appealing for witnesses to help determine what happened.

Lanes one and two of the motorway have now reopened after remaining closed for much of the day.

But drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible with delays still expected.
