Person dies after being hit by a train in the Harborough district

British Transport Police were called to the line at Newton Harcourt, near Wistow, at 11.22am today “following reports of a casualty on the tracks”.

Paramedics also dashed to the scene.

But a person was pronounced dead at the scene following the tragic incident, said British Transport Police.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner,” said the force.

The fatal tragedy is causing serious disruption for rail travellers as all services connecting Leicester to Market Harborough had to be stopped as an urgent investigation was launched.

An East Midlands Railway (EMR) spokeswoman said early this afternoon: “Sadly a person has been hit by a train, between Leicester and Market Harborough.

“This is disrupting our trains on the Sheffield / Nottingham / London St Pancras route.

“Network Rail and the Emergency Services have teams at the area currently.”

Replacement buses are believed to be currently running between Leicester, Market Harborough and Kettering in both directions.
