Lubenham in Bloom is going for gold - here are some pictures of their stunning displays

A pretty Harborough village is striking out for glory in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.

The people of Lubenham are thrilled after the historic village was chosen to represent the East Midlands in the fiercely-competitive contest.

Lubenham will be going for gold in the Village category after scooping gold in the regional competition last year.

Margaret Richards, chairman of Lubenham in Bloom, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to go forward for the whole of the East Midlands.

“It’s a massive honour.

“It will be difficult because you have to reach a very high standard.

“But we’ll do our best and put our best foot forward.”

Yorkshire-born Margaret said Britain in Bloom judges will descend on Lubenham in August.

“They will be looking at our streets and roads and general cleanliness as well as the obvious such as plants and flowers.

“We’ll also have an East Midlands in Bloom judging panel come here in July,” she said.

“We have about 19 people here supporting Lubenham in Bloom.

“We’ve managed to get out just about every week making Lubenham come alive as we turn the village into a riot of colour.

“We have been out planting snowdrops on Westgate Lane and around the back of the village hall.

“We have planted nine barrels around the village and have been planting all winter.

“Pansies, tulips, daffodils, bulbs – we’ve been ever so busy!

“I’m very proud of our brilliant community in Lubenham.

“Our team’s very committed and put in so much effort and so many hours as well as no little skill and knowhow in all weathers.

“And we can’t wait for the Britain in Bloom contest in August – it’s going to be exciting for the entire village.”
