From food banks to financial help - how nearly 400 people have received help across Harborough

Almost 400 people are already receiving targeted support from Harborough council as the coronavirus crisis takes its toll across South Leicestershire.

Some 385 residents and families had requested help through Harborough District Council’s Community Hub up until Tuesday afternoon.

The local authority’s specialist unit offers immediate assistance to people who are vulnerable or self-isolating.

The council is also continuing to provide urgent financial assistance to struggling businesses across the district.

Over £14.5million worth of grants have been shelled out to nearly 1,090 businesses – over 75 per cent of the total funding total available.

And more businesses will receive vital support over the coming days.

About 1,400 businesses in Harborough could be eligible for grant aid.

If any businesses have not yet been contacted by the council then please wait to hear.

Cllr Phil King, leader of Harborough council, said: “We are working extremely hard to provide the support needed across the district.

“We have redeployed staff to help deliver food parcels and supplies to those who can’t get out of their homes.” He added: “We have been working quickly and efficiently to get financial aid, to what amounts to millions of pounds, to local businesses which are eligible.

“This combined effort is hugely commendable and I personally want to thank everyone involved.”

People who are vulnerable and do not have a local support network can contact Harborough District Council’s Community Hub if they:

Need immediate help with supplies of essential food

Are feeling lonely or would like a friendly phone call or text message

Would like to connect with a local community group

Need transport to medical appointments

Would like advice about staying active and exercising.
