The Market Harborough and the Bowdens Charity writes a regular column for the Harborough Mail. Here is their latest article.

When it comes to the arts nobody can doubt that Market Harborough, Great Bowden and Little Bowden are thriving, and there seems to be plenty going on for all ages to see and participate in.

At Market Harborough and the Bowdens Charity (MHBC), helping and encouraging the arts is one of our aims.

We are fortunate that we have a broad remit and can provide funding for individuals and organisations. Our only limitation is that the money is for the residents of Market Harborough, Great Bowden and Little Bowden.

As well as helping organisations and events, we have been able – through our Education Grants scheme – to help individuals making their way in the world of music and dance. One of the students featured in our recent article about Education Grants was professional flautist Gemma Freestone, while another of the students we support has gone on to perform with the Ballet Rambert.

Here are just a few examples of some of the organisations and events which we have been able to help:

The Great Bowden Music Fest was started in 2014 and takes place at the beginning of July each year, bringing a wide range of music. MHBC has supported the festival since its inception.

The Harborough Singers is one of many singing groups in Harborough covering all styles of music. It promotes choral music, developing singing skills and introducing audiences to new music. MHBC provided funding for the staging blocks which the choir uses for its concerts.

We are proud to have provided support for the Arts Fresco, now firmly established as the Midlands’ biggest streets arts festival. Originally established in 2002 by members of Harborough, it is run by a committee of volunteers.

MHBC has helped Great Bowden Recital Trust (GBRT) in a number of ways. It runs choirs and ensembles serving Harborough and the surrounding areas.

We assisted with the provision of a lift at Harborough Theatre to make the arts more accessible and have contributed to lighting and staging at Welland Park Octagonal Hall.

MHBC has also provided instruments for the Harborough Band.

We were recently grateful to receive a donation from Market Harborough Musical Theatre.

Sadly, the society is no longer in operation, but the trustees have donated its remaining funds to MHBC, specifically to be used in the area of music and the arts.

So if you know of an individual, organisation or arts event which could benefit from our support contact us on 01858 419128 or email [email protected]. For the latest information on our activities you can follow us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
