Charity column: Helping those in need of housing in the Harborough area

This year the Market Harborough and Bowdens Charity (MHBC) will be 450 years old.

More precisely, some parts of the various charities that now make up the organisation can trace their origins back that far, as there are documents dated from 1570. The documents in question include the fact that, at that time, the charity had seven houses.

We know that providing housing is very much part of our heritage and continues to be an important aspect of the work of MHBC to this day. We own 14 homes at Scotland End on

Scotland Road in Little Bowden. Known traditionally as ‘almshouses’, these houses and flats are available for residents of Great Bowden, Little Bowden and Market Harborough.

Residents are charged a Weekly Maintenance Contribution which is reviewed annually.

This modern accommodation benefits from ‘elderly friendly’ layouts, equipment and fittings including stair lifts, walk-in showers and security and emergency call systems. However, the

almshouses are designed for independent living and have no warden control facilities on site.

2020 will be another busy year for Market Harborough and the Bowdens Charity. We aim to be there for individuals of all ages and can help to support local events and organisations.

Our only restriction is that we can only provide support in Great Bowden, Little Bowden and Market Harborough.

We are particularly keen to receive applications for projects addressing health needs in Harborough, but we can also provide support for the arts, local heritage, sports, and

individuals in need among other things.
