The Rotaract Club of Harborough has been meeting since October but the hotel event saw the club awarded its official charter.

Chris Wells, the first president, welcomed guests to the event and outlined the club’s activities since their first meeting.

Rotaract is part of the family of service organisations of Rotary International.

Members are aged between 18 and 30. These young professionals, in business or vocational fields, are active in local and international projects.

Members of the Rotary Club of Harborough helped to set up the new Rotaract club.

Now the club is chartered, it will lead its own activities and will also work alongside the Rotary club.

In his introduction, Rotarian Jim Davies said: “For those of us in the local Rotary Clubs this new Rotaract Club marks not only a new member in our family of Rotary but helps to ensure a new generation of young Rotarians will be following in a few years.

“To that end, we will be working closely together and collaborating on many projects across all avenues of service – that is certainly the vision that Chris and I have developed during the past six months or so in bringing the new club to its Charter event.”

Rotary district governor Geoff Blurton presented Chris Wells with his official president’s badge, and congratulated him on being the inaugural president of the new Harborough Rotaract Club.

The district governor brought greetings from the worldwide Rotary International president to the Harborough club. The new club was also welcomed by Harborough Rotary Club president Les Dodd, and district Rotaract chairman Ricky Hallam.

Over the last two years, the Rotary Club of Market Harborough has also started the Welland Valley Rotary Club, the Interact Club at Robert Smyth Academy and the Rotaract Club.
