“We’d like to apologise to any customers in the villages around Market Harborough who’ve been seeing some low pressure or even no supply at certain times of the day.

“The problems are being caused by the incredibly high levels of demand for water we’re seeing at the moment,” said a Severn Trent Water spokeswoman.

“Customers across the Midlands are using hundreds of millions of litres more than they usually do.

“The issues tend to be short-lived, usually at times of peak demand.

“We’ve ramped up production of treated water to record levels in response.”

And the Coventry-based water company implored people to leave kit like sprinklers and jet washers – which use a lot of water - well alone as rivers, lakes and reservoirs run dangerously low.

“We’d love it if everyone could ditch the sprinklers and the pressure washers to make sure there’s enough water for the great hygiene we all need at the moment and for drinking and flushing toilets.”
