Litter-picking heroes across Harborough – known as Wombles – are now being backed by Leicestershire County Council as they battle to keep our district spick and span.

The council is supporting anti-rubbish campaigners throughout the county by vowing to help them get the equipment they need to keep our roads, streets, verges, parks and open spaces clean and tidy.

Thousands of public-spirited citizens belong to an army of active groups criss-crossing the county battling daily to combat litter louts and fly-tippers.

Vital practical support is now being offered through a new fund which will supply volunteers with road signs and hi-vis jackets to help keep them safe - and extra-long litter pickers to reach under bushes and hedgerows.

Cllr Louise Richardson, the county council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “Womblers provide a vital community service.

“The benefits are numerous.

“Litter-picking keeps our public spaces clean, aids wildlife, promotes walking and increases recycling.

“That’s why we want to support our local groups by giving them the equipment they need.”

She added: “It’s a great example of how we can support and empower our communities to make a difference in their area.

“I applaud our Womblers and hope that our support bolsters their brilliant work right across Leicestershire.”
