The regional air ambulance is also reported to have been scrambled after the Volkswagen Golf crashed in Broughton Lane, Leire.

The road was closed as all three emergency services descended on the Harborough village, causing serious local traffic disruption on Bank Holiday Monday.

“Officers attended and no occupants of the car - a Volkswagen Golf - were present,” said Leicestershire Police.

“The car was recovered and enquiries were carried out to locate the occupant(s) and owner of the vehicle.”

Police investigating the crash are still trying to track down the battered car’s driver.
