UKIP’s Kevin Sills, who represented the Loatland ward on Desborough Town Council, made the remark to Sharon Boore after she followed his Facebook page.

Mr Sills sent Mrs Boore a message which read: “Hi Sharon, thanks for following me, can’t think why? You’re not another girly remoaner following Ukippers are you? There’s loads of them.”

The remark left Mrs Boore, 46, speechless.

She said: “I live in Desborough and he is one of my councillors so I followed him, only to receive this.

“I was absolutely speechless and horrified that someone could throw words like girly.

“He knows nothing about me and misogyny and feminisim is big at the minute.

“I am a 46-year-old woman who has lived here for 10 years and has grown-up children.”

‘Girly’ is seen by many as a derogatory term to describe someone who is weak or effeminate.

Mrs Boore added that the remark was the last thing she expected to receive.

She said: “It’s not what you expect to hear from someone who is supposed to be representing your community.

“He is supposed to be a voice for Desborough people and that’s what he comes up with.”

Mr Sills apologised for the remark on social media but later announced he was to resign from the council.

He had also come under heavy criticism after videos of him shouting at somebody at a council meeting surfaced on Facebook.

He has promised a full statement today but added that the main reason for his resignation was ‘intimidation from the anti-council’ and that the remark was the trigger.
