Police are being told to stop “obscene” drivers flouting the speed limit on the A6 “mad mile” as they repeatedly smash the 100mph barrier before someone gets killed.

Cllr Phil King, the leader of Harborough council, has hit out after “moronic” motorists were clocked at 120mph and 107mph by officers between Great Glen and Kibworth at the weekend.

The lawbreakers were caught just weeks after a 32-year-old man from Leicester was caught hitting 132mph in his Volkswagen Golf in June.

Cllr King has now written to Leicestershire Police Chief Constable Simon Cole calling on him to step up efforts now to stop drivers “putting lives in deadly danger” on the notorious A6 bypass.

“This state of affairs just isn’t good enough – and we won’t tolerate it any longer", said Cllr King.

“We have had more idiots nailed at the weekend hitting up to 120mph between Great Glen and Kibworth.

“This is after we had the 132mph lunatic just a few weeks ago.

“These fools are hitting lethal speeds which are simply obscene.

“They are rocketing along at up to 62mph over the 70mph national speed limit.

“Yet I never see any details of them going to court.

“I never see anything of them being hauled up in front of magistrates in Leicester, fined and punished.

“Why do we never hear of these lunatics and speed addicts facing justice and being dealt with in court?

“They should be being named and shamed.

“We all have a right to hear and see who they are – and I want to know where they come from.”

The Conservative council chief is now urging Leicestershire’s top police officer Simon Cole to pull out all the stops to stamp out “insane speed freaks”.

“Every time the police roll up with their mobile speed cameras they catch offenders doing ridiculous speeds.

“But every Sunday or every month isn’t good enough,” insisted Cllr King.

“It’s not cutting it.

“Our officers should be out there on the A6 every day if needs be targeting and catching crazy drivers.

“So I am telling Mr Cole to do all he can to deal with this problem once and for all – and show that the police mean business.

“The A6 is a very busy road – it’s used by cyclists and pedestrians as well as by other motorists.

“These irresponsible morons are putting everyone’s lives at serious risk.

“At this rate it’s only a matter of time before somebody gets seriously injured – or killed.

“If you have a blow-out or a catastrophic mechanical failure or a split-second lapse of focus at 120mph or 132mph you are a goner.

“You will end up dead – and you could well kill other innocent road-users at the same time.

“You will end up in little pieces scattered all over the road.

“The emergency services will have to go out and pick up your pieces.

“Your devastated family will have to put your pieces into a coffin to bury you.

“That’s what we are talking about here.”

The latest speeders were netted on the A6 at the weekend as the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix went ahead at Northamptonshire’s legendary Silverstone circuit, 45 miles south.

“They must think they are Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen.

“But they aren’t world-class racing superstars capable of mastering incredible speeds,” rapped Cllr King.

“They are ordinary drivers like you and me.

“I live in Kibworth and see them speeding all the time – and it makes me sick.

“If wannabe boy and girl racers want to let rip then book a slot at a local race track.

“But don’t turn the A6 in the middle of Harborough district into Silverstone.”

He’s also imploring police to investigate any social media sites which may be partly to blame for speeding and racing.

“There’s a pattern emerging here.

“We are seeing motorists driving at wildly-excessive speeds time and time again on this piece of road,” said Cllr King.

“Is there something more that lies behind it?

“I’m also very unhappy and disappointed that police are calling this the ‘mad mile’ on their Twitter page.

“This isn’t helpful – nor is it funny.

“Dubbing this length of the A6 the ‘mad mile’ almost makes it a rite of passage, a badge of honour, for these idiots to speed along it.

“So I’ll be mentioning that to the chief constable as well – it’s got to stop.”

A Leicestershire Police spokesman told the Mail: “We fully understand the concerns of many people living in Kibworth, Great Glen and the surrounding areas regarding motorists driving at excess speed on the A6.

“Officers from the Harborough and Wigston Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) continue to carry out regular traffic monitoring patrols on that particular stretch of road.

“On Saturday (8 August), officers stopped two separate drivers – a man and a woman – who were recorded driving above the speed limit.

“They were both spoken to and will receive a summons to court.”

Rob Nixon, the force’s deputy chief constable, said: “Speeding – along with driving while using a mobile phone, driving without using a seatbelt and driving while under the influence of drink or drugs – is one of the main causes of collisions.

“Together they’re commonly known as the ‘Fatal Four’.

“As a force, we take speeding extremely seriously and continue to listen to the concerns of residents and other motorists about areas where speeding may be a problem.”

DCC Nixon added: “Officers will continue to carry out regular pro-active patrols on the A6 between Kibworth and Great Glen and prosecute those found to be breaking the law.”
