A man who stabbed his victim on New Year’s Day in Broughton Astley in an unprovoked attack has been jailed for four years.

James Green, 31, was locked up after he knifed his 47-year-old victim, who had been enjoying a night out, at about 1am on January 1.

Green, of no fixed address, admitted at Leicester Crown Court one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one count of possession of a bladed article.

He was jailed for four years for causing grievous bodily harm and 18 months for possession of a bladed article on Monday March 23.

Green will serve the twin sentences concurrently.

His victim was walking home with friends after celebrating in Broughton Astley in the early hours of New Year’s Day when the assault happened.

The revellers were on Main Street when Green approached and started shouting at them before walking off and entering a nearby address.

He returned with a knife moments later and stabbed the stunned victim in the back.

Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service dashed to the scene.

The seriously shaken-up victim was rushed to the University Hospital in Coventry to be treated for a single stab wound.

He was allowed to go home hours later after treatment.

Det Con Simon Roberts, of Leicestershire Police Complex Investigation Team, was the investigating officer.

“The victim was assaulted as he returned home after a night out with friends.

“He was stabbed in a seemingly-unprovoked attack leaving him bleeding and requiring hospital treatment,” said Det Con Roberts.

“Enquiries commenced to find who was responsible and resulted in Green being arrested hours later when he approached an officer on duty at the scene.”
