Harborough police are warning everyone to stay clear of “open water” after responding to reports people were jumping in to Foxton Locks to cool off.

Officers went to check out the locks at Foxton, near Market Harborough, on Friday night after a scorching day.

They don’t appear to have found anyone leaping in but took the opportunity to urge people to stay away.

“The locks, canal and open water are not a safe place to swim, please be aware of the dangers.

“It may appear safe on the surface but you cannot see what lurks beneath, not to mention the barges,” warned Harborough police.

Officers issued the warning as the start of this week is also set to be hot and sunny across South Leicestershire.

The locks, canal and local rivers could all prove too tempting for youngsters and teenagers still off school at home on lockdown desperate to cool off.
