Harborough district man charged with a string of serious terrorism offences

He was charged tonight following an investigation led by the Counter Terrorism Policing North East team and will appear in court tomorrow

A man from the Harborough district has tonight (Wednesday October 28) been charged with a string of serious terrorism offences.

Hisham Chaudhary, aged 27, of Chestnut Drive, Great Glen, was arrested following an investigation led by the Counter Terrorism Policing North East team.

The specialist anti-terrorist police unit, made up of seven forces, was supported by Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands and Leicestershire Police during the inquiry, the Harborough Mail has been told.

Chaudhary was seized and detained under the Terrorism Act on the morning of Thursday October 22, police said.

The suspect has been charged with the following serious offences:

- Four offences of disseminating a terrorist publication, contrary to section 2(1) of the Terrorism Act 2006

- One offence of membership of a proscribed organisation, contrary to section 11(1) of the Terrorism Act 2000

- Two offences of entering a funding arrangement, contrary to section 17 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Chaudhary has been remanded in custody, police said.

He will appear before central London’s Westminster magistrates’ court tomorrow (Thursday) via video link.

A 29-year-old woman from Leicester was also arrested in connection with this investigation, police said.

The woman, who hasn’t been named, has since been released without charge.
