Police have issued CCTV images of a man they want to question after an 86-year-old woman had her purse containing £740 stolen in Lutterworth.

Officers hunting the thief have released pictures of a suspect wearing a mask as they branded the theft in broad daylight in Lutterworth town centre last Tuesday (January 26) an “exceptionally cruel crime”.

The pensioner collected her pension from Lutterworth post office at about 12 midday before buying a takeaway drink from a café on Church Street.

Her purse containing £740 was then stolen by the opportunist thief in front of other shoppers.

“It was reported the purse was stolen by a man who offered to help the woman,” said Leicestershire Police.

PC Debby Weidacher said: “This was an exceptionally cruel crime at a time when we all need to pull together.

“It happened in the middle of the day when many people would have been out and about and we are asking anyone who may recognise this man to get in touch.”
