Actor David gets his big TV break

David Knight (13), a pupil at Lutterworth High School, is in the new 10-part series Hetty Feather, which begins on CBBC at 4.30pm.

“It’s my first time on a big TV series,” said David.

“We were filming in a private school in Kent for 10 weeks last summer, and it was a really good experience.

“Yes, I’ll be watching the series myself. If I don’t watch myself, I don’t know how I’m progressing.”

The series is based on a best-selling book by children’s author Jacqueline Wilson, who also wrote the Tracy Beaker stories.

Set in London in 1887, the story centres on Hetty and her life at the Foundling Hospital for abandoned children. Here Hettie finds herself up against Matron Bottomley, the boss of the institution.

David (pictured above) plays Ned, one of Hetty’s friends.

“Ned’s quite nerdy” explained David. “He wears small, little glasses and he’s kind of the brains of the boys’ group. But later on, without giving too much away, you see he’s got a bit of passion underneath.”

David said he was put forward for the part by his agent at Just Right Management.

“Now I just want to keep progressing and working in different things, and be the best actor I can be” said David.

“So far my school has been really supportive.”

David’s mum Pat Knight, a former nurse, was with David in Kent for the filming.

“They had a tutor on set, so us parents just sat in the gardens chatting, saw a few bits of the filming, and watched lots of films” she said.

She said she and husband Jim Knight, an automotive clay sculptor in the car industry, tried to be supportive parents.

“In fact David has inspired us” she admitted. “Last year all three of us appeared in the Wycliffe Drama Group’s pantomime Cinderella at Lutterworth College!”
