Volunteers in a Harborough district village have been handed £11,000 as they get behind the community during the Covid-19 emergency.

They have been awarded the grant by Leicestershire County Council to help fund their work and activities in Broughton Astley.

Working with the parish council and other groups, public-spirited local people are practically supporting the village’s most vulnerable residents every day.

They are carrying out vital tasks such as arranging deliveries, walking dogs, picking up shopping and medication, posting mail and putting in a friendly call.

Delighted Cllr Clive Grafton-Reed, chair of Broughton Astley Parish Council, said: “This is wonderful news.

“Building on the early leafleting campaign and freephone helpline set up, this funding will ensure the support can continue and develop, focusing on those who can’t necessarily access social media or don’t have family and friends able to assist them.”

He added: “The group is also looking forwards to determine how this new support network should be sustained in the future and how they can help restore community activities once the crisis has passed.”
