Neil spoke after Mr Johnson, 55, was moved into an intensive care unit at London’s St Thomas’s Hospital last night as he battles coronavirus.

As the drama grips the nation and dominates the news, the local Conservative MP told the Harborough Mail: “This is obviously very concerning and I’d like to send Boris my very best wishes today.

“The fact that he’s had to be admitted to intensive care after being ill with this for days just highlights how bad this virus can be.”

Neil said he is willing Mr Johnson to recover fully and quickly for his worried family’s sake – and the entire country’s.

The Premier’s heavily-pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds, 32, has been in self-isolation herself and is banned from going to hospital to support him.

“First and foremost I really feel for Boris, Carrie and the family on a human level.

“They are all having to endure a terrible ordeal,” said Neil.

People can be monstrous on Twitter but they are actually being nice about what’s happening to Boris.

“The coronavirus crisis is helping to unite and bring the country together.

“And the Queen got it spot on with her memorable message to the nation on Sunday night – her words were very well written.”

The MP said he’s known Mr Johnson for many years and he’s backing him to win his toughest ever fight.

“I’ve known him for a long time.

“I first met Boris when he was still a journalist and editor of The Spectator.

“I came across him again when he was Mayor of London,” said Neil.

“He’s a genuine larger-than-life character.

“Boris has got loads of energy, he’s very bouncy and sociable.

“We often see him in the tearooms and canteen in the House of Commons.

“He’s a great mixer and will quite happily sit down and have a chat and a cuppa with all of us.

“Boris is a fantastic character and he’s so strong and determined.

“He’s not long won a massive majority in Parliament and we need him back fit and well doing what he does best – leading our country forward.”

Neil said Mr Johnson’s shocking medical plight hammers home the call for all of us to stay at home and keep our distance.

“This horrific virus can hit any of us – none of us are immune to it.

“We all have to stay at home, keep our two-metre distance from others, keep washing our hands and follow all the latest Government and health advice.”
