“We all need to do our bit to win this desperate battle.

“We have entered a national lockdown until at least December 2 to help reduce the spread of the virus,” said Phil.

“It is vital that we all stay vigilant and continue to follow all the Government’s guidelines around staying and working at home where possible.

“Please make sure you all wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, wearing face masks in shops and indoor public places, and keeping at least two metres between people.

“Together we can make an impact and hopefully reduce the rate of infections by Christmas.”

But the Conservative council chief is also urging people to get behind their local shops.

“Please remember that a lockdown doesn’t mean we can’t support our high streets and independent shops – and many of them are still trading via websites or social media.

“We are also continuing to work with the business community and tourism sector to boost opportunities and sales at this crucial time for the local economy.

“It has never been more important to stay at home and stay safe.

“That way we can control the virus, protect the NHS and save lives.”
