One million pounds is being ploughed into a new fund supporting Leicestershire’s voluntary and community sector during the coronavirus emergency.

Leicestershire County Council’s hardship fund will enable local groups – who will be hit by reduced café sales, room rental or donations – to continue to provide vital support to people who are isolating.

The local authority is working round-the-clock to keep crucial services for vulnerable people running and working with the Local Resilience Forum.

County Council leader, Nick Rushton, said: “Communities are already playing their part. “But I want to do everything we can to enable them to keep on providing that vital support.

“These are the most challenging times for almost a century.”

Cllr Rushton stressed: “Councils, the NHS and emergency services are continuing to work together closely – and this money bolsters this mammoth effort.

“Again, our county councillors are working hard to support people in their areas and this is a good way for them to put forward projects from their local patches.

“We’re taking every step possible to protect and support our residents, partners and businesses.

“I’d urge people to keep on following the national advice.

“Doing so will help to save lives.”

The council:

* Is exploring a number of options, including asking staff to move quickly into other roles, so it can continue to deliver the support people depend on

* Is supporting schools

* Has closed libraries and museums, as well as sites such as Beaumanor Hall and the Century Theatre
