The rate of Covid-19 infection across Harborough has plunged, the latest figures show this afternoon.

The number of new coronavirus cases in the district has almost halved in a week - one of the most dramatic falls anywhere in the country.

The latest seven-day rate of infection in Harborough is 151.4 people per 100,000 people – slightly below the national average after weeks of being above.

Some 142 people tested positive in the district in the seven days to Saturday November 28, plummeting from 266 the previous week.

Harborough has now dropped to 103 in a table of 315 local authority areas in England.

But just up the road, neighbouring Oadby and Wigston, which are still battling an incredibly high infection rate, are ranked sixth in the national league.

Mike Sandys, the Director of Public Health for Leicestershire, said there had been a “great fall” in the number of new Covid cases in Harborough as well as throughout Leicestershire.

But he urged people to stay cautious and vigilant, warning that nearly 90 per cent of local people are being struck down through “household transmissions”.

“You need to go on doing your best to not contract the virus while you are out and about.

“And do what you can indoors too – such as using separate towels, trying to keep your distance and so on,” stressed Mike.
