The rate of Covid-19 infection in Harborough is now the highest in Leicestershire as it tops 100 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of new coronavirus cases has spiked across the district this month.

Spiralling cases are being fuelled by a serious outbreak at Kibworth Mead Academy in Kibworth Beauchamp as well as smaller incidents at other schools in Harborough.

Mike Sandys, director of public health at Leicestershire County Council, said: “We’ve had around 100 cases (94) over a seven-day period from 9th to 15th June and the district now has the highest infection rate in the county at 100.2 per 100,000 of the population.

“We’re looking closely at the detail and the affected age groups, but this will be linked to transmission among the schools community.”

Urging people to be extra-vigilant, Mike stressed: “It’s vitally important that the basics around hand-washing and social distancing are followed as well as when people are out and about.”

Meanwhile, the Rapid Covid-19 Test Centre at Harborough Leisure Centre on Northampton Road, Market Harborough has shut after four months due to falling demand.

“The number of people going for lateral flow tests at the leisure centre is very few so the centre is now no longer operating.

“That’s due to many people now having access to rapid testing kits at home,” said Mike.

“So, in line with the direction from the Government, we’ve moved to a more flexible approach of rapid testing kits being available at such places as libraries and pharmacies.
