Business leaders across Harborough are getting behind Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s roadmap to lead the country out of the unprecedented Covid pandemic.

They are hailing the Premier’s escape route out of the tough long national lockdown hitting the economy hard as “positive” and “sensible”.

But they are asking for more clarification about particular issues such as before and after schools clubs and booking foreign holidays.

Businessmen and women have responded as shops, hairdressers and pubs up and down England face being forced to stay shut until April 12 at the earliest.

Campsites and holiday lets can reopen for single households from April 12 - but international travel is completely off the cards until at least May 17.

A spokeswoman for Market Harborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce, which represents scores of local businesses, told the Harborough Mail: “Overall we are positive and encouraged by the government’s roadmap out of Lockdown.

“It seems like a sensible strategy that hits the key areas balancing the kickstarting of the economy and the protection of the NHS.

Schools reopening (on Monday March 8) is a key part in getting the economy back to normal and enabling work to return to some sort of normality.”

But she added: “However, it would be good to have further clarity on the offering of before and after schools clubs, enabling employees and employers to plan accordingly.

“In addition it would have be welcome to see more information regarding office environments being made safer so that working from home could be removed or reduced, especially for those who have been vaccinated.

“Also, the seeming rush to book foreign holidays could be deemed a little premature.

“What rules are in place?

“If, for example, an employee was to book a holiday abroad would they have to quarantine for two weeks, leaving them potentially out of action for three-four weeks?

“This would then leave businesses struggling to operate.

“All in all a cautious and slow return to normality is definitely favourable over a quick opening of all facilities that could then see us approaching another lockdown.

“It certainly seems as though, for the most part, the Government has taken the precautions necessary to prevent this,” stressed the Chamber’s spokeswoman.

“However, should there be any delay to the staged emergence from lockdown we would like to see appropriate business support packages be made available.”
