More than 30 new Covid-19 vaccination centres will open in England this week, as the NHS continues to roll out the biggest immunisation programme in its history.

The 32 centres include the Black Country Living museum, where BBC drama Peaky Blinders was filmed, a racecourse, a football stadium and a former IKEA store.

6.3 million jabs

The rollout of the new centres comes after government figures showed more than 6.3 million people in the UK have now been given their first dose of the two-dose vaccine against coronavirus.

A record-breaking 491,970 people were vaccinated in a single day over the weekend, suggesting that the government is on course to meet its target of vaccinating 15 million of the most vulnerable by mid-February.

People aged 75 and over are now being invited to book a vaccination at centres, or at more than 70 pharmacy services which are now operating across the country.

Those who cannot, or do not want to, travel to a vaccination centre can wait to get their jab at their local GP service or hospital hub.

More than 1,000 GP services and over 250 hospital sites are now offering vaccinations in England.

32 new centres

The 32 new vaccination centres opening this week will start by vaccinating mainly health and social care staff from Monday (25 January), before opening their doors to more patients on Tuesday (26 January).

The first seven large-scale centres opened in England two weeks ago, followed by a further 10 last week.

The latest openings will mean there will be a network of almost 50 centres across the county, each capable of jabbing thousands of people per week.

More than one million letters have already been sent out inviting people to the 17 vaccination locations already in operation, along with some community pharmacy sites, with hundreds of thousands omore being sent to individuals over the age of 80 in the vicinity of these 32 new sites.

You do not need to contact the NHS for an appointment, as you will be invited when it is your turn. You cannot get vaccinated simply by just turning up.

Appointments are staggered to allow for social distancing and people are urged not to turn up early to avoid queues.

Vaccine Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “I am delighted we are opening even more places for people to get a jab – as of this week there will be almost 50 vaccination centres, more than 250 hospitals hubs and over 1,000 local vaccination service sites, run by GPs and pharmacies right across the country.

“This will enable us to vaccinate as many people as possible in the weeks and months to come and I encourage anyone who has been invited for a free vaccine to come forward and get a jab.

“Remember, with high levels of infection everyone must continue to follow the rules, stay at home and maintain social distancing – even if you have had the vaccine.”
