Parents with children due to start at primary schools in Leicestershire in September 2021 can apply for places at their preferred schools now.

Mums and dads will have from now until Friday January 15, 2021 to submit their applications.

Cllr Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for children and families, said: “We know starting school is a big milestone.

“So we would advise parents and carers to start considering this now.

“Allow enough time to research and shortlist up to three primary schools that they want to include in their application.”

He added: “We encourage parents to make their application online as they will receive an automatic acknowledgement that it has been submitted.”

There is no automatic entry system for any school in the county.

So parents should also ensure they exercise their right to apply for three school preferences and are aware of the closing date.

Late applications have the lowest priority being processed after those made on time.

Parents unable to apply online may call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 and request a paper application form.

A total of 7,611 applications were received for autumn 2020 start, of which:

* 92.4% per cent (7,035) secured their first choice (90.3 per cent in 2019)

* 4.7% per cent (358) secured their second choice (5.2 per cent in 2019)

* 0.88% per cent (67) secured their third choice (1.6 per cent in 2019)

* 98% per cent (7,460) secured one of their top three choices (97.1 per cent in 2019)
