Following last season’s play-off victory, the Black Cats are competing in the Midlands 1 East - the highest level they have ever played at - this season.

And director of rugby James Mckay-Mount has been impressed hy how the side are growing into life in their new surroundings.

“The main ethos comes from coach Joe Hill. He says it’s not about where we finish in the league, or whether we win or lose each game, it’s about seeing consistent progression and improvement from the players in the squad,” Mckay-Mount said.

“If you look at some of the games from the beginning of the season, to where we are now, we’d put 50 points on against some of those teams now.

“That’s the squad progression we’ve had so far.

“We want to do well and everybody wants to win the league, but the important thing is that progression, building together and moving forward.”

Market Harborough were edged out 20-5 at sixth-placed Old Northamptionians on Saturday, ending the day eighth in the table.

But whether the Black Cats are enjoying the highs or suffering the lows this campaign, Mckay-Mount believes the squad spirit will help them prevail.

“The squad have mostly been together for years. Some are related in ways, and that really helps with togetherness in some of those tough games,” he added.

“Some of the games are very tasty, but it’s a great feeling being involved in those games to be honest.

“When the fixtures came out and I looked at the teams we would be playing, I must admit, I was a little bit worried. But the lads have done fantastically well.”
