Doe and Butler settle contest in favour of Harborough Firsts

Market Harborough Hockey Club’s Women’s Firsts won 2-1 when they hosted Charnwood Sileby Firsts on Saturday.

Emily Doe and Charlotte Butler clinched the vital goals.

The Women’s Seconds drew 1-1 at home to Leicester City Ladies’ Fourths.

Player of the Match Ruby Howe was on target.

What the Seconds had thought was going to be a tough game turned out to be an even, good natured, competitive match.

Harborough worked hard throughout the game to keep possession of the ball, and won the first half with a sweet tap in across the goal from Howe that had been worked up the pitch via a some lovely passing open play.Leicester managed to even the scores in the second half, and both teams created further chances to take a lead, but they couldn’t be converted.

There was a goalless stalemate for the Women’s Thirds away at Leicester City Ladies’ Fifths.

Harborough Men’s Firsts secured a fine 9-0 home victory over Leicester Men’s Seconds.

Johnny Ashwin scored three and Nick Hall grabbed a brace.

Further goals came from player of the match Ben Langdown, Ryan Harrison, Jon Cooper and Johnny Cordingley.

Aiming to keep their winning streak alive, the Firsts had to overcome a defence-minded Leicester side.

But after opening the scoring goals came at regular intervals.

The Men’s Seconds lost 4-2 away to Atherstone Adders Thirds, Matt Cook and Harry Wilford scoring consolations.

The Men’s Thirds lost 1-4 at home to Khalsa Leamington Sixths, Sam Haynes-Coote on target.

Harborough were extremely unlucky not to have come away with a point despite the scoreline.

They started well but conceded a very unfortunate goal.

Harborough applied pressure and were unfortunate not to score, enjoying plenty of the possession but conceding three further times.

In the latter stages of the match, Haynes-Coote scored a superb hit from a short corner.

Overall the team could have done better, however there were many positives to take away from the game.

The Badgers lost 4-3 at home to Long Buckby.

Noah Styles, the player of the match, scored twice with Maisie Howe also on the scoresheet.

The Badgers’ first goal was a lovely flowing move, beginning with a save at the back from Niamh Burton, who then played it up the pitch.

Styles skipped past the opposition’s midfield and opened the scoring.

Buckby moved 2-1 ahead before Howe - playing with relentless passion - restored the lead.

Styles added the third but two goals from the Buckby winger settled it.
