Athletic’s boss happy ahead of new season

Lutterworth Athletic boss Mike English is upbeat as his side prepare for their final two pre-season friendlies.

Athletic host Oadby Town on Saturday and on Tuesday, Anstey Nomads are the visitors to Hall Lane.

They kick off the United Counties League Division One season with a home date against Potton on Saturday, August 8, and English said: “I’m happy with where we are.

“We’ve kept most of the players from last season and I know we are a good, tight bunch who will be competitive.

“We were disappointed to miss out on promotion last season by just a point.

“I’m not saying we are going to win the league, but we will be there or thereabouts.”

Last weekend, Athletic were beaten 5-1 at Caerau Ely in their last pre-season friendly .

Athletic went ahead against the Welsh Football League Division One champions through a 25th-minute Danny Laywood penalty after Dom Ivens was felled.

But the lead was cancelled out before the break. Caerau Ely then went ahead after 68 minutes and three goals in the last 10 minutes gave the score line a lopsided look.

Danny and Adam Laywood, Nathan Bedford and Dom Ivens all had their first run-out of the pre-season in Cardiff and English said: “We were competitive for an hour and that’s encouraging.

“They are a very mobile side and we lived with them for an hour.”
