Police officers are appealing for witnesses. The assault happened at 10.10am on Friday, January 15, on a path from Symington Rec to Mill Hill Road, near the town centre.

The woman, aged 53, was assaulted from behind by her attacker, who hit her on the back of the head with his hand.

The woman fell to the floor, dropping her handbag. The robber grabbed the woman’s purse and ran off across the Rec, towards St Mary’s Road.

He is described as five feet 10 inches tall, of slim build and wearing a dark blue hooded top and dark coloured bottoms.

Police officers will be out in the same area of town tomorrow (Friday, January 22) to question local people a week after the attack happened.

They want to see if anyone remembers anything, or if there is an eyewitness who saw the robber running from the scene.

Pc Malc Roberts, based in Market Harborough, said: “A robbery in the town is a very unusual occurrence.

“This appears to be a completely random incident in broad daylight, and we are taking it very seriously.”

After the assault, the shaken woman, who was not seriously hurt, went to a nearby friend’s house, from where she contacted the police.

If you have any information about the attack, contact PC 1365 Stu Venables on 101.
