VIDEO: Carnival brings out the best in the community

About 10,000 people turned out to watch this year’s Market Harborough carnival float parade.

And although 5,000 people turned up at the Symington’s Recreation Ground showground this year, numbers were lower than in previous years due to summer rain.

Carnival chairman John Bush said: “Everything went well. The parade was colourful as usual and the crowds turned out along the route in great numbers.

“We estimate about 10,000 people were on the parade route and there were certainly as many, if not more, this year.

“Numbers on the showground were less by perhaps 1,000 so we would estimate about 5,000 in total.

“The rain arrived at a bad time for the showground and people left early. This was disappointing for the crowd and resulted in lower income from the stallholders.

“Both Harborough Round Table with the It’s a Knockout contest and Harborough Football Club with the six-a-side tournament reported successful events.

“Thanks as always must go to Stephen Sanderson Transport whose drivers gave up their free time unpaid – without them there would be no parade. The carnival is truly a town event both for the organisations involved and for the public, and long may it continue.

“It is too early to know what is available for local charities, certainly less than last year, but there will be something.”
