Market Harborough Chess Club has won a stunning victory in the Birstall County Cup final.

The four-man team was victorious over a higher-rated Loughborough squad.

All the Harborough players faced higher-graded opponents, but two wins and two losses gave Harborough victory, with their half-point handicap.

“It’s always a pleasant feeling when an underdog triumphs!” said team captain Romilly Ilersic.

It’s the second year in a row that Harborough has won the County Cup.

This year’s team was Mr Ilersic, Ian Clarke, Charles Oppenheim and Jonathan Newham.
