The widespread power cut knocked out 1,800 homes in the Lubenham Hill area and the west of the town just before 7am.

The huge outage struck at 6.46am.

Every customer had their power restored by 7.25am, said a Western Power Distribution (WPD) spokeswoman.

“The cut was caused by an underground cable fault,” she said.

“Our engineers are working hard now to locate the problem and fix it.

“We were able to restore power to our customers so quickly by re-routing power supplies.”

The WPD spokeswoman said the black-out wasn’t sparked by spectacular thunderstorms and torrential rainstorms which hit Market Harborough and surrounding villages at about 9pm last night after a steaming, muggy day.
